10 Things That Inevitably Happen When You’re Seventeen

What if you were seventeen forever? In our favorite new Peter Pan retelling Never EverWylie Dalton finds herself whisked away by a boy named Phinn to a mysterious tropical island off the coast of New York City where everyone’s stuck at seventeen and life is an ongoing party. Sounds awesome, right? We asked Never Ever author Sara Saedi to share ten things that inevitably happen when you’re 17, and between love, life, and drama, it looks like it’s one of the craziest AND best years of your life.

Your parents will never understand you.

At least that’s what it feels like for Wylie Dalton and her brothers. They’re so over their parents that they run away to a magical island just to get away from them. But you know what they say… absence makes the heart grow fonder.

You will not be able to avoid the drama that is PROM.

What to wear, whom to take, where to have the after party. These are legitimate dilemmas. Prom on Minor Island is no different— except for that whole bomb scare incident. No big deal.

Someone you love won’t like you like that.

They say the kind of love that lasts the longest is unrequited love. Well, Tinka knows a little something about that. She’s spent years pining after Phinn. Some might call her his shadow. Sadly, Phinn’s just not that into her.

Social media will become your frenemy.

It’s a love/hate kind of relationship. One day it’ll make you feel great about yourself, and one day it’ll make you feel terrible. And that’s why Minor Island has a strict “no social media” policy. Yup, these teens are so not into iPhones or Snapchat.

The future is NOW. And you’ll have to make some big decisions about it.

Decisions like—what colleges will you apply to? Where should you go for spring break? Should you move to a magical island where no one ages past seventeen, even if it means never seeing your family again? You know, just standard #highschoolproblems

Nostalgia will give you all sorts of feels.

Pretty soon, you will graduate high school and become an adult. It’s exciting and scary and sad and you’re already missing the simple life. Unless you’re Phinn. He doesn’t believe in adulthood. He’d rather skip college and party on a tropical island. Spring break… FOREVER.

Someone you love will love you back. And all will be right with the world.

The romance might start off rocky like it did for Phinn and Wylie. It takes awhile to forgive a guy who whisks you away to a deserted island against your will. But every relationship has its ups and downs.

You will screw up and make mistakes, but they’ll make you a better person.

Everyone makes poor decisions sometimes, but what matters is that you come out the other side. Wylie had a long list of regrets and mistakes, but without those experiences, she wouldn’t be such a badass.

Your friends will get you in ways that no one else does.

We all need a bestie in our life. Especially Wylie. As the new girl on Minor Island, she feels like she’ll never fit in… until she meets Lola. They do everything together and their boyfriends are best friends. Talk about #squadgoals.

You will worry that your best years are behind you.

I mean, everyone does say these are the best years of your life, right?? Wylie loses sleep most nights, because she thinks it’s all gonna go downhill after high school. But good news: life’s biggest adventures are actually ahead of you!
