Arundhati Roy.

What’s your favorite thing about your book?

The characters! I love them like real people.

If you could spend one year on a deserted island with one character from literature, who would you choose? Hana from The English Patient. I find her fascinating and very resourceful. I think she’s one of the most beautifully written characters in all of literature.

Where do you write?

On my dining table with a view of the Hollywood Hills, at my local coffee shop, by the ocean.

Who is your favorite hero or heroine of history?

I have two. Does Virginia Woolf count? I find her pretty heroic. Also, Rani Lakshmibai, who was known as Jhansi Ki Rani. She was queen of the princely state of Jhansi in Maharashtra and one of the leading figures of the India Rebellion of 1857. She was a prominent symbol of resistance to British rule in India.

Probably a retweet from Why My Cat is Sad.

What is your favorite season?

Spring

If you could teleport anywhere in the known universe right now, where would you go?

Either Havana, Cuba or Lisbon, Portugal.

Do you have any writing rituals?

All of my rituals involve food. I need a constant supply of coffee, homemade macadamia nut butter and fruit. If I’m having a bad writing day or overwhelmed with work, I write in bed in my pajamas.

What is your idea of earthly happiness?

Friends, family and good food. Ideally all together in my backyard.

What is the best concert you’ve ever been to?

Radiohead at the Hollywood Bowl in summer 2008

What are you currently working on?

A fantasy set in ancient India.
