Tarot author Marissa Kennerson gives your favorite YA ladies a reading

When we revealed the Tarot cover only a couple of days ago, we know it had everyone (including us) suddenly wondering – what if my favorite YA character had a tarot card reading? What would their fate be? So we went to the source: author Marissa Kennerson and had her create some readings for some of your favorite YA heroines – let’s turn the cards and see if fate will be kind!?

Mirabella, Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake

Mirabella is just so cool and smart and powerful. She would definitely be the IT girl of Instagram if the island of Fennbirn had social media. Although the priestesses would have to post for her, because Mirabella does not have time for any distractions. She’s too busy conjuring storms and fighting the powers that be!

I pulled the Strength card for Mirabella. The Strength card often depicts a woman with a lion, and we know Mirabella is not the naturalist of the group. But the Strength card is really about trusting one’s instinct and understanding and relying on one’s inner strength to get them through a difficult time. Or in Mirabella’s case, vanquish some overly ambitious, mean-spirited poisoners and priestesses gone awry!

Mirabella, I know times are tough and you were born into crushing circumstances, but if anyone can come out on top (ahem, without having to kill those most dear to you), it’s you.

Penny, Emergency Contact, Mary H.K. Choi

Penny rules. She has great taste in music, lightning fast wit, and a healthy dose of black in her wardrobe.

But if I approached Penny while she was getting an iced coffee and offered to read her cards, I worry she might grab the tarot deck, throw it up in the air, and take the opportunity to run away. Or she might whip her phone out, ready to text Sam (who is probably standing right behind her) to come rescue her from all the weirdness.

Two of Swords. At times, you can’t use your intellect to make decisions. You can’t just think things through. You have to have faith, let things progress, and not be afraid to act on emotion sometimes. For someone like Penny and myself, our brains don’t want to shut off, so this can be a hard space to sit in.

But Penny, things are going to work out with your mom, with your friends, and with Sam. Life is just going to have to do its own little dance and you might not be able to control the timing. In the meantime, sit down and keep writing—it’s a great distraction. Plus, all of this discomfort might make for a great story one day.

Mila, Undead Girl Gang, Lily Anderson

My hands would shake beneath the knowing gaze of Mila and the arched eyebrow of Riley while I pulled a card for these girls. They’re both so well-versed in all things witchy and Tarot. But if Mila knew my heart was in the right place, I’m sure I’d get her attention and her sweet support. And Mila would be near Riley, so the whole Riley-turning-into-a-rotting-corpse thing would be under control for the moment.

The Six of Pentacles. Clearly, Toby is eyeing you for a promotion because according to this card, the money is going to roll in. So buy those zombie girls all the tacos they can eat and a whole new Walmart wardrobe—good fortune is more fun when you share it with friends!

Cassandra, I Capture the Castle, Dodie Smith

Oh, Cassandra. I just love her. Always cuddled up with a book somewhere, and a bit shy on the outside, but all passion and fire on the inside. For her I pulled The High Priestess.

I had to think about this one for a moment to determine its meaning. I Capture the Castle is such a rich coming of age story. Cassandra isn’t slaying literal dragons, but rather dealing with poverty, unrequited love, jealousy, a father who has lost it, and so much more. This card is so relevant to Cassandra, but I think it’s really for all of the ladies. We have the power and insight of the High Priestess inside of us, but it takes maturing and getting to know ourselves to access her magnificence.

Cassandra, you keep doing what you are doing and don’t force it. You might not be as outgoing as Rose at first glance, but you are one powerful little lady, and great things are coming your way.
