Reading Recs

What to read after watching SHADOW & BONE: Season 2

Did you just watch all 8 episodes of Shadow & Bone: season 2 the moment it hit Netflix? Because first of all, same. But secondly, if you fell madly in love with Alina, Kaz, and the rest of our unforgettable favs, we have some book recs to help with the hole in your heart the end of season 2 left! (And yes, we know you’ve already ready the book series twice).

Nightbirds by Kate J. Armstrong

If you love the Grisha in Shadow & Bone, we think you should meet the Nightbirds. In this dazzling new fantasy world full of whispered secrets and political intrigue, the magic of women is outlawed but four girls with unusual powers have the chance to change it all.

Beasts of Prey by Ayana Gray

If the monsters emerging from the fold gave you CHILLS, we think you’d like reading about the monsters in Beasts of Prey as we follow Koffi and Ekon through the Greater Jungle!

The Kinder Poison by Natalie Mae

The Kinder Poison tells the story of what happens when one girl is chosen to be the human sacrifice in a deadly game between three heirs who would do anything for the crown. Like Alina, Zahru knows a bit about becoming a pawn in someone else’s game–and what happens when you decide to take matters into your own hands.

The Beautiful by Renée Ahdieh

If you find yourself inexplicably drawn to Ben Barnes–*cough* uh, we mean, The Darkling, you won’t be able to resist the seductive underworld of Renee Ahdieh’s The Beautiful series!

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

If the HIGH stakes and incredible worldbuilding (ahem, those MAPS!) immediately sucked you in while watching Shadow & Bone, we think you’d be a big fan of Sabaa Tahir’s bestselling series An Ember in the Ashes.

The Severed Thread by Leslie Vedder

Which threads of fate will hold—and which will break? If you love the themes of fate woven into season 2 of Shadow & Bone, then this series should definitely be on your list. Set in a world of twisted fairytales, The Severed Thread combines lost ruins, ride-or-die friendships, and heart-pounding romance.

The Future King by Robyn Schneider

Shadow & Bone wouldn’t be the same without witty comebacks and banter, so it’s only fair that we add a book to match! Welcome back to the great kingdom of Camelot. Scandal, betrayal, and courtly crushes abound in The Future King, the highly anticipated sequel to The Other Merlin!

Chaos & Flame by Tessa Gratton and Justina Ireland

Shadow & Bone knows how to do, shall we say, *complicated* romance, and so Chaos & Flame definitely belongs on this list. Get ready for ancient magic, warring factions, and a romance between the two people in the world with the most cause to hate one another. Hitting shelves March 28th!

Made of Stars by Jenna Voris

Who doesn’t love a lawless love story with a high stakes mission? Inspired by Bonnie and Clyde, Jenna Voris’s heart-stopping tale of passion and crime will have you seeing stars. Coming to shelves this month!

Bound by Sword and Spirit by Andrea Robertson – Coming May 16

Legends and Liars by Morgan Rhodes – Coming June 13

Shadow & Bone knows a thing or two about giving us mixed feelings about complex enemies. Get ready for Legends and Liars in which Joss and Jericho team up with some of their greatest enemies—including two of the most powerful mages in the world—to bring an end to the queen’s empire of lies, from New York Times bestselling author Morgan Rhodes.

Threads That Bind by Kika Hatzopoulou – Coming May 30

In a world where the children of the gods inherit their powers, a descendant of the Greek Fates must solve a series of impossible murders to save her sisters, her soulmate, and her city. This is the perfect gripping fantasy plot to rope you right in when the “I need something new to obsess about” feeling kicks in!

A Crooked Mark by Linda Kao – Coming June 20

If you loved the tension and complicated dynamic between Matthias and Nina, we recommend you pick up A Crooked Mark, in which Matt must hunt down those marked by the devil…including Rae, the girl he has fallen for.

Thieves’ Gambit by Kayvion Lewis – Coming September 29

We SO missed the crows. If your favorite parts of Shadow & Bone include watching Kaz lead the crows into deadly missions with impossible circumstances (ahem, Hellgate), then you’re going to love the Six of Crows heist vibes in Thieves’ Gambit, in which a cutthroat competition brings together the world’s best thieves…and one thief is playing for the highest stakes of all: her mother’s life. We promise it’s worth the wait.
